BIOGRAPHY
Louie Gong (Nooksack) (M.Ed.) is a highly influential Coast Salish artist, activist and social entrepreneur with a knack for bringing people together. In 2008, he founded the iconic lifestyle brand Eighth Generation - the first Native-owned company to produce wool blankets - triggering a movement that has diverted millions of dollars from non-Native corporations to a new generation of Native-owned businesses and artist. By successfully disrupting a colonial system and then selling Eighth Generation to the Snoqualmie Tribe, the creative force completed the blueprint for how to merge values and business - something he refers to as the "Native American Dream."
BACKGROUND (1974 - )
Louie Gong is a Nooksack tribal member born in British Columbia Canada. He was there raised by his Grandma Renee and Grandpa Peter in a household without running water for his first decade. They moved to the Nooksack tribal community when Louie was 11 years old, and he lived there with his Grandma until finishing graduate school at 23 years old.
He is influenced by his father, Gordie Gong, a lifelong martial artists and professional kickboxer who competed all over the world.
Louie comes from a diverse heritage of Squamish, Nooksack, Chinese, and White ancestry. Drawing strength from his mixed roots, Louie Gong draws on his cultural background for inspiration in all aspects of his life.
Despite struggling academically at Nooksack Valley High School, he excelled at Whatcom Community College and Western Washington University, eventually earning a Master's Degree in School Counseling.
MULTIRACIAL MOVEMENT (2002 - 2012)
In 1999, Louie Gong volunteered for a bone marrow donor registration drive at Western Washington University that was organized MAVIN, a national nonprofit that focused on raising awareness about people and families of mixed heritage. Over the next decade, Louie's involvement with MAVIN grew from a volunteer to a board member and eventually President in 2007. His leadership coincided with Barack Obama's spotlight on the mixed-race experience, and the subsequent platform provided a fertile training ground for Louie to engage the public in discussions of race and identity by weaving together empirical data and stories his unique upbringing.
In 2006, Louie began conducting workshops and public speaking around race and identity. Over the next decade, he conducted over 100 "Design Yourself" workshops throughout the USA. These workshops used shoe customization to introduce basic concepts related to race and identity.
Louie's commentary on the mixed-race experience was highlighted in countless media outlets, including NBC, MSNBC, and The New York Times, where he took pride in communicating complex ideas about race in accessible ways.
In 2010, Louie stepped down from MAVIN's leadership to concentrate on his art and entrepreneurial pursuits - carrying with him the confidence and experience of this early leadership experience.
